Cosmos Time

In South Africa, autumn is synonymous with the appearance of the cosmos flowers. On our way to the dam this weekend, we marveled at the profusion of flowers lining the roadsides.

Cosmos flowers always remind me of driving to church camp when I was a little girl. We usually had our annual church camp in autumn. While driving up to the Magaliesberg, we would often stop to pick some flowers. Memories…

Cosmos flowers are originally from Mexico and South America. During the Anglo-Boer War, bags of horse feed were imported for the horses of the English troops. Apparently the seeds of the cosmos flower were brought in in those bags of horse feed. It’s an ill wind that blows nobody any good.

  1. Wow! What beautiful cosmos photos!! I just saw the cosmos along the road to church camp and stopped for some photos too. Interesting to hear where cosmos came from (and how they got to SA!) – didn’t Jacarandas also come from South America?
